According the National Center for children in poverty (NCCP) more than 16 million children in the United States – 22% of all children – live in families with incomes below the federal poverty level – $23,550 a year for a family of four. Today child poverty is overlooked and it shouldn't be because it's so easy to get involved and help.
For the next few month I will be blogging about Child Poverty. I chose child poverty because for the last 4 years of high school I was surrounded by kids that are of this category. My high school was called Bright Futures Academy which is a small Christian based private school for inner-city kids and enrolls about 60 students a year. My school is in Partnership with City of Refuge which is a place that house homeless women and their kids, women enslaved to sex trafficking, and teenage mothers who are homeless. City of Refuge is located in Atlanta, Ga. City of Refuge offers both lifesaving resources and life building tools to individuals and families in Atlanta who are living on the margin. For younger kids living at City Of Refuge there was a day-care called Eden Village and some of the older kids attended Bright Futures while their parents go out every day to find a job. From the 4 years that I attended Bright Futures we have only had 3 students to attend the school that lived at City of refuge. This year it was a senior to graduate with me who lived there so I got a feel of what it was like. Since my school is located within City of refuge I got to work with a lot of the kids who lived there and had a chance to talk to some and even make friends.
Being here at Bright Futures located at City Of Refuge was something I enjoyed because ever since the 5th grade I have dreamed and has been passionate to start a homeless shelter for kids and adult in poverty called Love-Joy. This this day it is still my dream. To graduate the seniors had to do a big senior project on a future business we want to do and mine was on this Homeless shelter for kids considered in the child poverty category. For my project I interview Pastor Bruce who is the executive over City Of Refuge and Philip Ross who is the executive over Bright Futures and after speaking with them my interest in this shelter has elevated.
City Of Refuge takes various donations from diapers to cash or anything they can store in their warehouse to disperse among the women and kids. City of Refuge have events where you can donate yearly and if you follow them on Facebook you can keep up with the events. This past August there was a dinner for donors where the students from City of Refuge usually serve food, and showcase their talents. Bright Futures also have this dinner but it's called NIGHT OF IMPACT where the school band sings and play a little music for donors. Bright Futures Night of Impact is Thursday, September 17, 2015. Single tickets are $150 and vary for different positions and throughout the night art work created by the students are sold and the money collected here goes to the school, after school program and summer camp.
Both Bright Futures and City of Refuge are here to help those children who are in poverty and help them make a difference for their lives. Child poverty isn't discussed in the news regularly and often go unnoticed. There are a lot of ways to get in touch and help. There are hundreds of organizations from City Of Refuge, National Center For Children In Poverty, Save The Children, Children Defense Fund, Care, and so much more. Those commercials you see that says donate 50 cents a day is a start.

This blog will try to focus on ways to get involved and possibly some success stories of kids who came from this environment.
