Hillary Clinton speaks about the AAP’S (American Academy Of Pediatrics) partnership with her “Too small To Fail” campaign. Her campaign focuses on improving early childhood literacy which is a start to help end child poverty. It is said that kids who grow in low-income households hear fewer words than kids who grow up in more affluent ones. Hillary’s idea is to come in by helping pediatricians encourage parents to read and interact with their kids. Hillary stated that “In middle income neighborhoods, there are an average of 13 books for every child while in low-income neighborhoods, there are 300 children for every one book.”
Hillary being a spokesperson for child poverty is a big deal for both her reputation and her presidential campaign. Hillary’s whole approach coincide with the approach that Jay Heinrichs express in his book “Thank you for arguing” to persuade an audience. In “TYFA” Heinrichs mention that “when trying to get your audience to do something they should like and trust you.”(pg.57) Hillary Clinton has been the First Lady of the United States under her husband Bill Clinton a former U.S president. Hillary has been running for president for two years now, so she is a person people like and trust based on her reputation. By siding with Pediatricians is another way Heinrichs mention is a good way to persuade your audience. In “TYFA” Heinrichs mentions “having virtue or cause meaning to make the audience believe that you share their values.”(pg.57) He gives the example when former President Abraham Lincoln when he tried to abolish slavery. Heinrich tells how Lincoln sided with racist as if he believed the same as them and then he worked to abolish slavery. Hillary shows that she shares the beliefs of pediatricians because she is talking about helping the kids, in which pediatricians care for. Pediatricians reading about this campaign will want to participate because Hillary shows compassion for kids and their well-being.
Jim Steyer is also a spokesperson for child poverty. He is the founder and CEO of Common Sense Media and Clinton’s partner in “Too small to fail.” Steyer spoke at the AAP conference the same day as Clinton. He pointed out that “We (as in the United States) are investing trillions in Iraq and Afghanistan, but not in our children. He goes on to say that “The under-investment of young people in this country is morally wrong and economically stupid.” His accusations come off as what Heinrichs would call blame and addresses his values. (pg.27) Heinrich says that “Blame says whodunit? Or whose fault it is and values address what is morally right or wrong.”(pg.27) Steyer blames the United States of the under-investment of the young people and he shows his values by saying that it is morally wrong and economically stupid. Those who believe that the under-investment I young people is wrong might agree with Steyer view.
