Dear children living in poverty,
What are your worst nightmares? What about your future scares you? Do you have dreams for life? Do you have hope even after all you’ve been through? Do you feel neglected from the world and all who lives in it?
You are not alone. We see your struggle. Don’t give up. We are here with you. We are on your side and constantly working in your favor. I know it’s not easy, but it’s OK. Just be hopeful. Greater is coming!
I know things may seem bad and everything is horrible, but joy comes in the morning. I know that you’ve probably had night/days with no food, sleepless nights, sleeping in shelters, sleeping in car or on the street. I am here to say that don’t check out just yet for there are people and organizations working to help you. I know that you hurt seeing your family struggle and you can’t do anything about it. I hurts me and others to see you hurt and to look you in your eyes to see that the hurt is deep.
We love you and want better for you. We’re doing all we can trust me. We want to save you like we’ve saved others. You’re still alive, it can be worst, but we’re here so that it won’t get worst. We have helped others and we’re here to help you I know that you have been hurt but don’t let that hurt define you. Greater is coming!
I know your struggle. Living with a single mom of 8 my family has been placed in the group of low class or close to poverty. My mom never made us feel like we were poor. My mom was in college had multiple cars and all. We always had food, clothes and a stable home. We got new stuff like the latest shoes and clothes all the time. We didn’t consider ourselves poor but because of our situation and surrounding we are classified as those who are living in poverty or close to it. The neighborhood we live in is known as a close to poverty area even though we have a nice house. I admit that there were a lot of homeless people in the neighborhood on every corner but then there were lots of nice homes and people with nice cars that didn’t look poor at all. No one in the neighborhood go to college and more than half didn’t finish high school and never even thought of college. Being the oldest of 8 and in the situation I was placed in, no one would have believed that one of us will graduate high school as valedictorian at a private school let alone go to college but look at me. My situation to some is a success story itself.
That is when I learned that there are two types of poverty: Relational poverty which is the deprivation of some people in relation to those who have more and then there’s Absolute poverty which is a deprivation of resources that is life-threatening. I am here to tell you children that whatever your situation is, don’t give up because there are ways out and people that are working to help you.
Take Reno’s story for example, he's a 7 year old child living in poverty. Reno lived with his parents whom both never went to college. Reno lives in a broken-down mobile home his father found in a garbage dump. There's no running water and they only have one small fan to keep them cool and a wood-burning stove for cooking and to keep them warm in the winter. Because money is tight, they feed themselves by hunting wild game, such as deer, squirrel and possum and by growing meager vegetables. Every morning Reno leaves his home by himself at 5am to get to school, which is about 12 miles away. In school Reno struggled with reading and was anxious in the classroom. However after attending Save the Children's literacy programs and receiving the extra help and support he desperately needed, he has made great improvements. Now Reno doesn't feel embarrassed to read and reads better. Reno now loves going to school and learning.
Reno's education is a top priority to his parents and they want him to go to college. They both agree his reading has gotten better as a result of the Save the Children literacy programs he's involved in and the support from his teachers.
Rino has gained the self-confidence he lacked, and is going to continue to grow and learn – and declare freedom from poverty.
I am pretty sure that some of you could relate to my story or Reno’s story but I am pretty sure that some of your situations are worst. Just remember that there is help, you just have to find it or wait and help will come your way. I know sometimes it’s not easy always having to be the person smiling in the family encouraging them, but it’s all worth it in the end. You were placed on this Earth for a purpose and you purpose wasn’t to live I poverty your entire life. With that being said think about this: The slaves were slaves for a while but after being patient, having hope and keeping their faith they were freed. You want be in your situation for too long, there are too many people working in your favor. Soon you would be freed from poverty and your story will be a story worth telling.
When bad things happen, it may seem bad in that very moment, but remember, it’s just that moment-it’ll get better. I along with other people and organizations are here to make sure that your dreams come true and that one day you’ll be able to tell your success story. Don’t give up or ponder in sadness because you see no light at the end of the tunnel, for you are the light and soon it will be your time to shine you just need a little help doing so.
I am with you. We are with you. Don’t give up there are ways out of your situation. It’s worst before it gets better. Things may look bad now but they get better. I see you, we see you, and you are not looked over. Turn that frown upside down:), because Greater IS Coming!
